General working of a radiator is simple. The coolant fluid flows through tubes around the objects to be cooled and acquires the heat. Then it comes into theradiatora and flows through its tubes. Here the tubes are surrounded by relatively cooler air which absorbs the heat from the hot coolant. It is a well known fact that more area will allow more heat exchange. Thus in a radiator the coolant tubes have flat metal flanks lining them. These allow more surface area and thus better heat exchange, which is all that is required. Automobile engines produce a lot of heat as the fuel burns. This heat has to be dissipated before it can damage the engine and the allied parts. Thus an efficient cooling system is required. Secondly the engines generally work best at around 200 F, about 95°C. At this temperature the engine oils are less viscous thus minimizing the wear as they spread easily and most importantly the fuel vaporizes readily. Thus cooling below this is not beneficial. The job of engine radiators is to let the engine heat till this temperature and then take the excess heat out as fast as possible to maintain the temperature.. The coolant used in any engine is not the same and largely depends upon the radiator and the cooling required. Larger radiators can work well with normal coolants but smaller ones need high performance coolants.Old radiators used water for most of the vehicles where as almost all of the new ones use coolants. These might be used directly or some are additives to water. The coolants increase the heat exchange and allow use of a smaller radiator. Radiators are heavy parts thus smaller is better for the car. In general the car engines produce a lot of heat to be taken out. The higher temperatures can damage the engine and even the efficiency becomes poorer with the rise, thus there is no option than to take it out. The best way to cool the engines is fluid cooling systems that use radiators. Water is the best coolant and with additive it improves the cooling. Radiators can be used to cool many things other than engines. in the cars alone, they cool the gearboxes too, mostly the automatic ones. The potential uses of radiators can be well understood from the fact that the supercar Bugatti Veyron used 10 radiators for engines to spoiler! To know more kindly visit automotix.net |
