   Radiators - Radiator Maintenance

Radiators are the most common heat exchangers known to us. The fluid in a radiator will flow around a hot object and cool it by absorbing heat. Then this liquid is cooled by air blown over the radiator tubes. The fluid is forced through the tubes for fast cooling and a powerful fan will storm the fluid tubes to take a step further. This is the basic working. To get better performance, there are modifications to every part in this cooling system. The temperature of the engine needs to be maintained and not only decreased, thus a thermostat is essential.

The engines convert almost 70% of the chemical energy in fuels into heat energy and thus the cooling systems are left with a Herculean task of the dissipation with the radiator and the coolant. Most of the automobile engines work optimally around 200 F or 95°C. The fuel vaporizes readily at this temperature, increasing the efficiency. Lubricating oils are least viscous around this range, spreading easily they decrease the wear of the engine parts. The cooling in the automobiles thus is controlled by a thermostat.

The cooling system can be divided into two major parts. The fluid travels through the engine or the object to be cooled. These tubes run all over the places absorbing the heat. A pump maintains the flow of the liquid. When the liquid is through and is heated, it comes into the second part for cooling. Here the tubes have metal flanks to increase the area for heat exchange with surrounding air. Air is constantly passing the tubes when the vehicle is on the move, still to achieve greater cooling; a powerful fan throws it over the tubes. Automobile radiators like truck radiators are used to cool the engine and other components. There are other radiators used to heat the thing up.

In cold weathers, they are used to heat up homes. Hydronic radiators are a classic example. These use the same principle but the heat in the tubes is used up to heat the room. These are also available in very small sizes, some even mere 2 inches deep, easily accommodate in any room. These are preferred over other heaters as they are fast in response. They use heated water for this purpose. The functions these two perform might seem opposite, but actually they are only different sides which are useful for us in the heat exchange.

A typical radiator dissipates enough heat to heat two normal houses, on a regular freeway run. You can imagine the amount racing radiators might be dealing with. These are specially made radiators. They use highly researched coolants and the construction is ultra light and high exchange as the performance is the goal not the price of the radiator. Radiators are the allied equipment in a vehicle, that do not have a direct hand in the working but their role is essential for the run and makes longer runs possible. automotix.net
